Colombia Halts Coal Sales to Israel Until Genocide in Gaza Ends
The Colombian Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism published a decree according to which the country will stop selling coal to Israel in an attempt to pressure Tel Aviv to stop its genocide of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
“This decree will enter into force after five calendar days… and will remain valid until the orders of provisional measures issued by the International Court of Justice in the process of applying the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip are fully complied with,” states the decree published on Friday, June 7.
The decree considered the execution of the ICJ’s provisional measures as “urgent” in order to “prevent and stop acts of genocide against the Palestinian people and with the purpose of protecting public morality and the essential interests” of Colombia.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro stated on social media that the suspension of coal sale will continue “until the genocide ends.”
Colombia is the largest supplier of coal to Israel, to which it sold $450 million worth of coal last year.
In May, the Colombian government announced the suspension of diplomatic relations with Israel, in condemnation of the zionist entity’s genocide of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, and urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue an arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
